Podcast Project: Audio File Tutorials

Please complete your recording and editing of your podcasts today.

Working with audio clips can be frustrating when using Windows Moviemaker--since the program is really meant as a cheap video program to make amateur "movies". It is not intended to create podcasts, in other words. This may cause you some frustration. But there's help! Here are some common issues/problems students encounter when working with audio and editing clips.

Since you will need to be able to learn this for our next unit(s) on photography, film, television, and advertising, it is best to learn it now. If you are not directly connected to the editing of your group's audio files, help your partners by learning about:
HOMEWORK: Complete your podcasts if you did not complete them in class. I will collect these files when we return to this class on Feb. 28.

  1. So, we've spent several periods talking about the Black Lives Matter movement. From the day I heard Ms. Belair say "Oh yeah we're gonna do this on Friday", I was dreading the day. Nothing that we've done today has educated me on it at all, since I already know quite a bit about it. After all, I prefer to be knowledgeable on something before forming an opinion on it. Writing things off as being one thing or another the moment I hear of them. I don't like talking about racial politics, since my opinions on them tend to set certain kinds of people off.
So I've stayed basically silent the entire day while others spoke about their thoughts on the movement. I heard some things I agree with, I heard some things I disagreed with, and I heard some things that were just baffling to even think about. One statement in particular was a story about how a boy in one of my classes' uncle worked as a teacher in Webster and was basically the only black teacher there. This boy was upset that his uncle "acted white". This particular statement annoyed me to all hell, since I hate hearing this. I hate hearing "acting white" or "acting black", since they're races and not personalities. This has nothing to do with me being asked why I act like a gay white boy multiple times throughout my life. If "acting white" is speaking proper, dressing nicely, presenting yourself as intelligent, and acting black is walking around like a crazy homeless man and saying "nigga" every two seconds, why would anybody want to "act black"? Luckily for me, several other students shut this idea down (thanks, Asher) so that I didn't feel obligated to.
Aside from hearing my favorite teacher being called racist several times because she literally said "I don't understand it, so I don't want to teach it", today has been fairly mild. I expected to hear chanting in the halls and the word "cracker" or "whitey" being thrown around every four seconds, but it's been relatively tame. Even those who I'd expected to be fully enveloped in the movement have shared opinions with me.
As for the reason I don't really like Black Lives Matter, that can be explained by several things. One: I see too much negative/dumb things that people do in their name, and that no one else in the movement seems to be against. Two: I have never had a pleasant experience while talking with a member of the movement about the movement. They usually just call me an Uncle Tom or talk about my internalized racism, which makes me give up. Three: The hypocrisy within the movement is outstanding. And four: They changed the definition of racism. Yes, that actually happened.
Overall, it has been an interesting day. It was amusing to hear people talk about a walk out so close to the end of the school day that no one's going to even attempt anyway, and hearing Ms. Belair talk about syntax and absolutes was quite informative.

  2. I get that black innocent lives are being taken and that is why our main focus is on this. I just find it ignorant that some people say all lives matter. Like yeah they do but at the same time you have to think about all of the current issues that are going on and how that should be our focus. Like if a house is on fire and the other has dry rot. Both situations matter but one is more dangerous. your house isn't gonna fall apart right now but the other house is burning down and needs to be put out. Its the same thing with all lives matter and black lives matter. All lives matter but right now there's many things going on in the black community.

  3. The Black Lives Matter situation has effected the world and the society. Everyone has a different view of it. This movement has caused many problems so far in the United States. How someone sees one race isn't the same way another person sees it. Not everyone has to agree on one thing. Everyone has the right to think what they want to. There are going to be disagreements, but violence shouldn't be used to prove a point. I don't disagree with the movement, but I also don't agree. I see both sides of the argument and I respect everyone's thoughts about the Black Lives Matter movement. Our community should all come together instead of just discriminating against each other.

  4. I've heard many opinions today, learned a lot about the people around me and their beliefs. For the most part we're a progressive place and people who aren't are scared to talk. Before anything I don't agree with benevolence or exclusion in anyway. so today there's been a lot of backlash and a lot of arguments, a lot of misconceptions, a lot stereotypes thrown around, but today has been interesting because I get to connect to people. I get to connect to them on a political and a moral level that would not have been achieved in this mass on another day. It's a good day to express yourself and your view point and add to the conversation no matter your views

  5. I feel like the problem with the Black Lives Matter movement isn't the movement itself but people's misunderstandings. Today in Mr. Della Gloria's class we had a very productive, mature, and wonderful conversation were a diverse class was able to have open conversation about personal experiences and opinions they feel passionately about. Today though I have also experienced many students who are placing a stigma with Black Lives Matter and the walk out the students have planned. Many students are criticizing each other for feeling passionately for the movement and claiming it does more harm than good. Some teacher have also placed this stigma. I feel though that Black Lives Matter is essentially a branch off the Civil Rights Movement and that we as a society have to get over all of the bad things associated with it and forget about the few extremist and realize it's about racial equality.

  6. I'm not really sure how I feel about it. On one hand, I'm into it and I think it's important to understand but then on the other hand I don't understand at all. Kind of a contradiction, I know I feel like a big part of it though, is that I'm going to be looked at differently if I do participate in it. It's important. And it does need to be addressed. I don't know. Honestly it confuses me and I don't understand it. And today hasn't really been helpful for me trying to understand it. It's been mostly people talking about personal experiences and how the black community needs to change in order for things to get better, but it really hasn't helped me understand why Black lives matter is such a big thing. I think it's because I'm not affected by whats happening to a lot of other people. And I think that's why I'm having so much trouble understanding it. Overall though, this day hasn't been helpful too helpful with my understanding. However, I can appreciate the effort teachers and other students have done to try and help deepen the student body's understanding of the situation.

  7. DISCLAIMER: I do believe in the black lives matter movement. For me it seems to be trying to separate the races like one race is more important and deserves more attention than the other. While black people and the police force still have their problems, there are other issues regarding muslims and mexicans that deserve attention too. This movement seems to gain more popularity by the day because of stupid ass media finding every way to make it out that white people are racist.
