Please complete the following lab tasks today:
LAB TASK #1: Choose an app, computer game/program, technology, device, or machine that you use and in a creative non-fiction reflective essay, explain and examine the significance of the item to your life--what does it do for you? What does it keep you from doing? Make sure you write about the pro's and con's of the item. Remember: tone is up to you. If you'd like to take a more humorous tone (like Ellen DeGeneres does in her article) you may. You may also wish to check here for some ideas when you select a topic:
Use the remaining time in the lab to research and prepare (outline) the key points you want to make in the creative essay you will be writing.
When you are ready to begin writing, please do so. Remember that creative essays have a beginning, middle, and end. They should use a hook and have a main thesis--what do you want to prove/persuade us about/tell the world, etc.?
Furthermore, creative essays reflect on an idea/subject and utilize all the lovely literary devices you have come to know and use in short fiction, poetry, and script writing.
LAB TASK #2: Take a look at the photography series/ads (thank you, Mariangelis, for completing our homework!). Choose one of the ads and in the COMMENT section below, complete the following analysis questions:

LAB TASK #2: Take a look at the photography series/ads (thank you, Mariangelis, for completing our homework!). Choose one of the ads and in the COMMENT section below, complete the following analysis questions:
A. What is the dominant image in the ad? What is the FOCAL point of the image?HOMEWORK: If you did not complete both lab tasks today in class, please complete the task(s) for homework. Both assignments are due next class!
B. What are the subdominant and subordinate (visual hierarchy) image?
C. What seems to be the main idea in the photo? What message might the photographer be sending us as viewers? Remember that many photographers will use the inverted pyramid to stress the most important points--the main point will usually be obvious in the photo...
D. Consider the REPRESENTATION of the images in the ad. What gender, nationality, age, religion, economic class, political stance, etc. is the ad promoting or using to create meaning in the photo?
E. What does the ad copy promise a buyer? What might be the problem with this promise?
In the ad for Zenergy, the dominating image is the iHome device. It is also the focal point. The subdominate and subordinate image is the sleeping woman in the background. The main idea is that the iHome device will help you get a better sleep. It's a seemingly white woman (can't really tell) on a good looking bed, so I'm guessing middle class. Political stance literally cannot be interpreted from this. The ad promises the buyer a good night's sleep!
ReplyDeleteOne may consider why a white woman needs more sleep...and herein lies our political message. What might the presumed "backstory" of this tired woman? Look for suggestive clues in the ad.
DeleteIn the Skittles ad the dominant image is the bag of skittles. The focal point is also the skittles bag because it's what captures the most attention. The subordinate image is the words, the subdominant image is the skittles bag. They want you to see the item first. The main idea in the ad seems to be that Skittles taste good, so you should buy their product. The item being bigger than the words gives off more attention.Promoting everyone because they want everyone to buy the Skittles, to make them popular. The ad promises the buyer that what they'll taste will be great, but people may not like the taste, they'll complain to their friends and so on.
ReplyDeleteDon't confuse dominant with subdominant. The skittles bag IS dominant. In this ad the only subdominant image (which is also the subordinate image...they mean the same thing) is the text.
DeleteA) The dominant image in this ad is the The word "grizzly" with the bear on top. The focal point is the tobacco can because it captures the eye.
ReplyDeleteB) The subordinate image s the diamond plate and the subdominate would be the words.
C) The main idea/objective of the ad is to get people to buy the smokeless tobacco.
D) It seems as is the ad is aimed for people who are smokers and chew tobacco. Old men.
E) The ad compromises the buyer a good, refreshing mint taste. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the mint that they're promising. They are promising "A man among mint".
Consider the sexual orientation of the buyer of this ad...what seems to be the slight or political message about "men" who chew tobacco?
DeleteIn the ad for HONDA SPORTS CAR, the dominant image is the crappy Honda. The focal point is on the profile, showing off the entire car. The subdominant image is the car and the subordinate image is the beige background. The main idea is that the car is strong and similar to a sports car, while being cheaper. The message is that this is high quality, low cost. I don't think the car has a gender. The age is young (brand new) to promote being modern. The nationality is purported to be American, despite the ad being from 1981 when Honda was still making cars ONLY in Japan. Religion and political stance also can't be interpreted from this. However, this would appeal to the middle and higher classes, mixed of various political and religious beliefs. It promises a good car, and the problem with the promise is that the car is Honda.
ReplyDeleteThe image cannot be dominant and also subdominant. That's a contradiction.
DeleteIn the Grizzly add the focal point in the product drawing your eye to it by being in the middle of the screen. the subordinate image could be one of two things depending in what catches your attention first, being the words in full white or the steel-metal-thingy in the background. The main idea is to show that this product is manly and tough made for most likely men who like to chew tobacco. This company is promoting that their product stands out over all competitors with their slogan "A man among mint" this leaves much to be desired and to all who buy expect the best and anything less than will be a downfall.
ReplyDeleteAs above, consider the message behind the word "sweetie" in this context.
DeleteIn the ad for the Kindle, the dominating image is the surroundings. The focal point in the ad us the bold words "#haveKINDLEwillTRAVEL", with Amazons logo in the bottom corner of the ad to give a suggestion of where to get the Kindle from. The main idea in the photo seems to be that the Kindle is good for travel and comfort wherever you are, as represented with the bold words on the ad. Sending the message that the kindle will work wherever you are based on where the man in the picture is with a kindle in hand.
ReplyDeleteThe image of the man wearing sneakers, who is likely to be a hipster (he has a long beard, despite being young and healthy) suggests that this product is aimed at hipsters (young Millennials who are on the go, but are educated)...the man is Caucasian, which suggests that this product is for "white" people or European ethnicities, and you might wonder about his political affiliation--he can be found outdoors hiking. The focal point is the man and the kindle (you can see the horizontal and vertical lines converge at his position...)
DeleteAd Chosen: JCPenney
ReplyDeleteA: The dominant image in the ad is the store logo, which is JCPenney. It is the most dominant because the color captures the attention, and because the reader would like to know where this ad is coming from. The focal points are the mother and daughter because they are in the center of the image and they capture the attention since they are doing an action.
B: The subdominant picture of this ad includes the hand mixer. That is because it is the thing next to the mother and daughter. The color of it also capture the attention of the viewer. The subordinate part of the image are the things below the image, which include the Magic Bullet, a Coffee Maker, and some pots, which are the other things that jcpenney offers and it makes people happy.
C: The message that the photographer wanted to get across is that by buying things in JCPenney, you can spend time with your family and do many things that will improve the family relationships.
D: The ad uses females in the ad, as it is advertising cooking materials. The mother seems young and the daughter seems like if she is ten or eleven. It does not specify a religion or class, but with the good looking kitchen in the background, it surely refers to someone who has money and wants to modernize their things.
E: The ad promises the people happiness when they buy new things. The issue with this, is that items do not buy happiness. They are showing the American values of money buying happiness. The issue is that by buying things, sometimes family don't get together because they can do things fast and easy with these modernized items. Also, things break and eventually, you lose your money from what you had bought.
long for why
DeleteNote the text as well at the top and bottom of the ad. For some reason in our culture making cookies from scratch is equal to sharing "family time" with your daughter...
DeleteAnd, of course, it's a woman (mother) in a kitchen with her female daughter. Gender roles are confirmed.
DeleteIt's not long, actually. I just analyzed the ad and explained what I saw. Sorry not sorry.
DeleteYou haven't posted anything for why. Exactly and Thank You
DeleteThe dominant image is the man with a kindle and he is sitting on the side of the mountain. It is also the focal point. The hashtag is the subdominant while the little words under that is the subordinate. The main idea in the photo is that you can take kindle anywhere specifically using travels. The message in the ad is directed towards and representing everyone and anyone. The ad promises people that the kindle is an amazing buy that they hopefully wont regret.
ReplyDeleteSee previous post about this ad. Your claim that "everyone and anyone" may not be correct.
DeleteIn the ad for JCPenny:
ReplyDeleteA. The dominant image is the two ladies in the middle of the picture, cooking, That is also the focal point.
B. The cooking appliances are the subdominant while the small text in the corner of the subordinate.
C. The main idea in the photo is that you can get different types of cooking accessories to help in the kitchen at JCPenny. The message is directed toward bigger families, allowing them to cook together.
D. This ad is directed toward adults who enjoy cooking. Either by themselves or with their families.
E. The ad promises the reader efficient and high quality kitchen appliances
See previous posts on this ad for further detail. There is a gender bias working in this ad. The depiction of domestic happiness through baking has a political message for an American audience. What might it be?
DeleteFor the Skittles ad the dominant image is the pack of skittles original (personally my least favorite flavor). The subordinate image are the words, equally as big as the pack of skittles, but the position of the words don't draw my attention. The subdominate is the skittles bag. The message is to simply buy and enjoy skittles. Skittles are just food and shouldn't be identified with a gender, nationality, political stance, etc. That you will taste a rainbow.
ReplyDeleteIf I don't taste a rainbow, can I sue for false advertising?
DeleteThere is definitely a "multi-cultural" aspect to Skittles. What might the "fistbump" suggest? Who "fistbumps"? The graphics of the text (like a 3-D rainbow) might suggest or make a promise to someone likely to buy this candy. What might it suggest do you think?
DeleteIn the ad for the weird manly bear mints:
ReplyDelete1. The dominant image is the tin of mints with the angry bear, the focal point is the text above it reading "MINT YOU WOULDN'T DARE CALL "SWEETIE"."
2. The subdominant image is the text under the mint tin "A MAN AMONG MINT." There is also a tobacco warning and although it is larger than the other text it is at the bottom and noticed last.
3. The advertiser is trying to present the mints as a superior brand, note they are refereed to as "premium" that makes the viewer feel entitled to own.
4. The advertiser is directing their sales towards males, probably specifically ones who feel their masculinity hangs in the balance of what mints they eat. The mints are presented as manly and the bear imagery, metal studded backdrop, and bold text adds to this.
5. The ad promises that these mints are surely kick ass and that the consumer will surely be much more masculine when they eat these mints but of course it's just a mint and any one who relies on mints to feel secure needs help from something greater than drugged man mints.
As for the JCPenny ad the main focal point is the two ladies as they are doing an action, this being cooking. This ad is aimed towards families but also creates a gender bias of the women. That they are women cooking together and this creates gender roles and promises happiness brought to women by these cooking accessories for the American audience to view.
ReplyDeleteFrom Karina:
ReplyDeleteThe dominant image for the maybelline ad is the women the focal point might be the text or her eye, the subdominant image is the makeup pallet. the main idea is that the makeup is going to make you look beautiful. the message it wants to give is that the makeup is new and amazing and you will look stunning. The representation is a white(?) woman whos wearing makeup, all other things are not shown or not clear in the ad. this ad promises the buyer a new makeup pallet with new color tones that will make you beautiful.
A. The dominant image of the Skittles ad is the bag of Skittles. The focal point of the image is the bag of Skittles. It’s the only image on there with text surrounding it.
ReplyDeleteB. The subdominant and subordinate image is the wording around the candy. The image of the Skittles captures the eye first because of its colors and it’s right in the middle.
C. The main idea of the image of the photo seems that the candy tastes like “rainbows” meaning it must taste good. The colors on the rainbow represent the Skittles in the bag.
D. The ad is using all the colors and the catch phrase “Taste the rainbow” to get people’s attention.
E. The ad promises the buyer that the Skittles would taste like a rainbow, if it was possible to taste a rainbow. The problem of the promise is that not everyone will think that they taste good like they present it.
A. The Dominant image in this ad is a women wearing the eye shadow she is obviously trying to sell.
ReplyDeleteB.The subordinate images are the captions that describe the product and the subdominant image is the big text that says "DARE TO GO NUDE" and the image of the woman face in the back.
C.I think the main idea of the ad is to show and not tell of what the eye shadow can do. They show and not tell by using the model in the back round who is wearing the eye shadow.
D. The ad uses a good looking and appealing young woman. By using this woman to promote their product they will get more peoples attention.
E.The ad promises that the buyer will look beautiful and like the woman in the back.
