Chapter 1 Quiz; Technology Prezi Projects

POST in the COMMENT section of this post. Make sure you include your name so you can receive credit for your response.

Question: Drawing on your experience, list the kinds of media stories (narrative) you like and dislike. You might think mostly of books, movies, and TV shows, but remember that the news, sports, political ads, and product ads are also usually structured as stories. Conversations on Facebook can also be considered narratives. What kinds of stories do you like and dislike? and why?

After you post (I'll give you 10 minutes to do so) we will take an open note quiz on Chapter One vocabulary (as hinted at from last class). You may use your notes for this task if you took notes. If you did not take notes, you must rely on your memory. You may not share your notes with another student for this test. Nor may you use your chapter handouts. Only your written notes.

When you complete the quiz, please use the rest of our lab time to continue researching the subject you chose for the Technology project. Look for both the positive aspect of the technology (what is does for us that is beneficial) as well as the negative (such as how it negatively impacts our society or social lives or how it negatively affects our environment).

You should also be able to explain:

  • when was it created,
  • who created it or invented it,
  • how or why did it catch on and become popular--or when was it popular,
  • what its use is/was, and
  • the positive and negative effects of the technology.

Your Prezi's are due next class by the end of 7th period. So, once you know this information and take notes on such things, please create and design your Prezi projects.

Your Prezi's will be shared with the class (and anyone with the link).

Remember: your Prezi can include text, video, audio, and pictures to illustrate your points--it should not only consist of text. It should also be structured so that a viewer can understand what the technology is and how it has affected our culture both positively and negatively.

HOMEWORK: None. If you did not progress on your Prezi, please feel free to continue working on it this weekend. The project draft is due Monday after 7th period.

  1. the type of media i like is informational media. i like watching things that gives me information about like cooking, dance videos, funny vines and sports. i also like movies that have lots of action or horror. things i dont like with media is when people make front of dead people or when they post false info about things like dead celebrities. i also dislike people who lie on media like fake rappers with fake chains or youtubers who lie and say they doing scary things and fake haunted houses.

  2. I like media stories that have a bit of drama in it. Whether it be television, books, or music I have interest in things that tend to be a bit dramatic. It could be anything thing from a murder investigation to relationship problems to something like Twilight. I just like drama because it is very entertaining, so any type of media I would indulge in would have some form of drama. I am not big on sports or politics or anything like that. Drama, arts, and things of that sort peak my interest when it comes to media because that is what I'm interested in and entertained by.

  4. I like media stories on topics such as, equal rights, women rights and other topics that are not usually spoken aloud in person. These stories are my favorite because they give people a chance to speak their opinion and stand up for each other. I feel as if these media stories are necessary in our society to bring important subjects into view so we can improve as a society.

  5. I can't stand reality T.V. except for one show, Chrisley Knows Best. It's not some Hollywood trash where all they do is go out and get drunk . It's a show about a very rich realtor who is trying to raiuse his kids to be humble but they're kind of spoiled and bratty. Sometimes, other times they're playing tricks on his kids and vice versa.

  6. I like music media despite every song is usually written about the same type of thing. Someone falls in love, someone falls out of love, someone still in love, things like that.
Music media is interesting in the way different people portray their feelings into the songs. One could be a really sad song with happy and beautiful tunes and words, while another could be an extremely happy song with a slow sad tune and depressing words.
I dislike media that comes from the news usually because many news channels get their facts mixed up or explain them in a way that makes things seem different than the actual situation. Many try to sugar coat the truth, making it seem better than it is while others stretch the truth and make it seem way worse than it is. The media always tries to tell it how the people want rather than what it really is.

  7. I like controversial media stories, regardless if I agree with the author's point of view or not. I like this because it gives me various perspectives on certain topics that allow me to form my own opinion based on what view seems most logical to me. I also like media that covers big news events, the latest in the sports I follow, inspirational stories, stories that can make you feel, stories that make you think, stories that cause you to question your morals and things you have assumed your whole life to be true or false. In terms of music I like all sorts of genres, except opera, opera is trash, although I had a ten minute discussion about how closed minded I am to label a whole genre of music as trash, I don't care it's still garbage. I seek music that is emotional, gets me pumped up or excited, or has a good (unique, catchy, intelligent, powerful, etc.) beat/lyrics, so pretty much everything that opera isn't.

  8. I like movies but not all movies. I like movies that have a lot of action because they keep me interested and when the movie is over I don't feel like I wasted my money. I like Science fiction because they make me wonder things like after I leave the movie I still think about it. Sci-Fi is really interesting to me and it's been my favorite genre for movies and books for a long time. I dislike horror movies not only because I'm scared but to me each year they just become more predictable and there is remake after remake.

  9. Regarding my interests in media, personally I am both for it and against it. I like the idea of being able to conveniently communicate with others and check in on people miles away or right next to me. However, I feel it does restrain human interaction and decreases social activity. Despite my relationships with media, I am extremely in love with music, it speaks to me. However, I do not particularly enjoy social media as much as others in my generation simply because I feel that people are too flamboyant about it and share way too much information as well as, how time consuming it is. I am intrigued with television, but not so much historic and scientific based television, I am distinctly into adventurous shows, cartoons, and a little reality television. We have made media a necessity or essential when in reality it is more so a want or desire.

  10. I like drama movies, movies with people who face struggle or stuff about their life. I dislike movies that have so much dialog and not much actions or drama taking place. I love watching crime shows like Law & Order or Criminal Minds. I dislike shows like stitches or vampire diaries. I love this show called shameless, its a little inappropriate but its funny and it about people and their life. I sometimes like E News because it has a mixture with celebrity updates and clothing lines and much more.

  11. I love reality TV shows, especially Korean Reality TV shows. They are so funny and they capture the realistic side of things, things most reality shows don't exactly cover. For example, Boys over Flowers, in a Korean reality show, they structure the show around social classes. A girl from what the middle class ends up getting a scholarship to a school for the rich and elite and because of this faces harsh treatment. I also love music , especially music videos because if you watch and pay attention, there is a story. For example, Blood Sweat and Tears by BTS, aka Beyond The Scene, the music video talks about how they don't want to give in to their inner demons .

  12. Jenna - Some narratives that I like are mystery and adventure stories/books/movies, etc. I like the narrative of some songs but in actuality, I'm referring to one singular artist. She sings about general concepts in songs like love, having fun, or the loss of someone important. Another narrative I like (since you said messages on media can be considered one) are messages I get from Snapchat since it's the easiest way to use up my time. Some narratives I dislike are stories I find boring... like some fantasies and philosophical readings. I don't like some music like country. When it comes to social media, I have a hard time reading through cringy messages from conversations in the past or reading something extremely edgy... you should see the stuff on Wattpad! Unless it's satirical and doesn't stress the edginess by incorporating it heavily then I guess it's funny.

  13. I like stories that are intriguing, and I also like stories that make you think a lot (like mystery novels). Things like that definitely interest me. As for stories featured in media, such as posts on social media, my taste differs. My level of interest in say, a Facebook post, really depends on who's posting it. For example, if I saw a post written by someone I don't really know I'd probably scroll past it. However, if a close friend of mine made a post, I'd most likely take the time to read it, maybe like and leave a comment. I don't really like stories that are uninteresting, obviously. I'm not the biggest fan of nonfiction or realistic fiction, as there's not really much that appeals to me in those genres. Going back to the social media example, if I see a post that's just a few, unimportant words (like "burrito lol") then I admit that I honestly couldn't care less. I'm not really the biggest fan of stories that provide false information, either. If someone is going to try and inform me about something, they might as well do it with factual evidence, unless the story had been written specifically to show an opinion or something fictional.

  14. The media stories I like:
    * Fantasy- protagonist must save the world with the help of other (Avengers, Batman, Teen Titans, etc.)
    * Drama- crime shows like Law & Order SVU, and Criminal Minds.
    * Mysteries- Who dunnit and also scientific mysteries that answer 1000 year old questions.
*Comedy- Parodies based on serious shows (Bad Lip Readings) , unethical comedy, memes, random videos that don't make sense.
    * Hip-Hop- Nas, Kap G, Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Joey Bada$$
*R&B- Chris Brown, Bruno Mars, Bryson Tiller, The Weeknd

    I dislike:
Country Music- for no specific reason. I just can't stand the sound of it.

  15. I enjoy all types of media and don't really dislike anything. Well I don't dislike anything besides some reality TV shows that are just full on cringey. How can people sit and watch shows like "Keeping up the Kardasians"? I love different kinds of reality TV shows/ Game shows such as Survivor, America Ninja Warrior and more. As for TV shows, movies and book there is no specific genre that I prefer.

  16. I don't like sports/magazines/documentaries/real life accounts. They're too real and boring for me, I want something exciting. Realistic Fiction or an interesting nonfiction stories are more of my speed. Narratives that have a connection to reality. (This means books.) Fiction that I like aren't the ones that involve dragons and orcs and elf's, I like fiction things that involve our reality but contain an aspect of the extraordinary. When we talk about movies I don't really care. Horror, fantasy, gritty non-fiction. A good story is a good story when in film format.

Music to me is interesting. I listen to all kinds, again, a good song is a good song. I think the only genre that I don't like is heavy metal or country. Old music is okay, The 1975 is sort of old school sounding music so that's that.

I don't really watch TV that much, but the things I do are AHS, Parks and Recreation, Shameless, Stranger Things (can't wait for halloween!!!) most of it is on Netflix because convenience.

  17. i like and dislike that media can change the community. Media is basically a online list of what to do, what not do. this can take a positive or negative path. the positive path being that we can better the world, especially when it comes to the pollution or sewage that is messing up our wild and marine life. the media has the power to show us how we can help, it can persuade the community into helping out so that our resources won't run out in about 50 years or so. the negative way is the reality of what they actually do, which is childish and sad. they show the community that you should work really hard for money just so that you can pay for overprices things and send the green paper right back into the system. it's style at this point in life, only switches the style around every other year. so it can take either other way, hopefully in the future there will be an era where the world will come to a realization on how sucky it is and will want to better its self. no promises though, right?
