Online/Social Media Prezi Project

READ: The synthesis packet about Google & Facebook. Then:

COMMENT: in the comment section of this blog (see below) please write a thoughtful post on the following question:
  • Google's corporate motto is "Don't be evil." Which of the major digital corporations (Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter...) seems to have the greatest tendency for evil? Why?
  • In contrast, which of those digital corporations (or other digital corporations you are aware of) seems to do the most good. Why might you think this?
After your reading and posting, please continue working on your internet/online Prezi project. See below for details.

Your Prezi should include:
  • A title slide that grabs our attention, with your name and the title of your presentation.
  • A slide that explains: WHAT is the media source/subject? (no more than 12 words in length!) You can add more detail in your speech/presentation to the class.
  • A video clip (no longer than 3 minutes in length) of your subject matter.
  • A slide that summarizes a review on the subject/topic (with attribution), in fewer than 12 words. What do people say about the subject? (You can add more detail in your speech/presentation to the class.)
  • A slide or two that visually explains how the media subject/topic has influenced American culture (you will fill in the details during your presentation to the class!)
REMEMBER: Prezi's are VISUAL presentations that allow media. Keep text (writing) short and to the point (concise). Use your own words (don't paste and copy other people's words...unless you attribute the quote to the source), and include JPG's or graphics, film clips, etc. to help you present your topic adequately. Know your topic! You will be expected to share this presentation to the rest of the class.

Aim to complete your Prezi today in the lab.

If you have missing work (or revisions), please attend to that as well, AFTER you have completed your Prezi. We'll view presentations next class.

HOMEWORK: Complete Chapter 2 and answer the ?'s as posted. Prepare your Prezi presentation for viewing.

It can be agreed that Apple does not have the best intentions for their users. The iCloud system that they use when providing the consumer with digital space is not completely secure of private. (Remember when everyone's nudes got leaked like Jennifer Lawrence yeah that thing) If your device is stolen or your password is figured out, the user's potentially private and explicit photos can be used for the whole world to see. Apple's devices such as the iPhone are sleek and appealing to the eyes. The software is also easy to use, even children can use them with little effort! But with such power, comes great responsibility. The iPhone can be described with a term used in gaming, "Glass Cannon." It is applicable to characters who can desolate enemy teams with massive damage but also can be finished with one good hit. The iPhone can handle all of these processes, but once that screen hits the ground, it's finished. You would think that something that costs more than $500 to be more reliable not to break in 2 seconds.

In contrast, which of those digital corporations (or other digital corporations you are aware of) seems to do the most good. Why might you think this?

The company that is arguably the most "good" is Amazon. This company services its users with items that they either need for something or just want to make them happy. The worst thing that they do could be advertising themselves. I would be scrolling on Instagram or something and a shirt that I was looking at 3 days ago could be linked on a post. They seem to be connected to everything. I mean, that's their job. To give people things they want and get money in return.

  2. I believe that Facebook has the greatest tendency for evil as they profit off ads based on political topics and conversation-engaging subjects. Their ads entice the viewer to click on it if it stirs negative feelings, or if they're genuinely interested in the topic and see how people react to it. Facebook says that their platform is neutral and doesn't support any sides but the frequency of what specific party displayed may not reflect the same ideas. If individuals accuse Google of hiding behind their motto, Facebook might as well do the same. Since Google's negative sides remain discreet for the most part, they don't seem as bad compared to Facebook, with concrete evidence and slander against them.

Amazon is most likely the digital corporation that does the most good. They filter out most of the bad items for sale so that one doesn't get the wrong item that's been falsely advertised. Amazon offers multiple platforms like the Kindle, Amazon Prime, etc that heightens user experience. Amazon also offers a return policy so that's nice... I'm not sure about the other corporations but from comparing them all, I've heard the least controversy from Amazon.

  4. I wouldn't say corporations are evil or good. I would say that corporations have a happy medium between the two. In being a large corporation as said in the text "you have to step on a few toes," but at the end of the day you still do what you purpose is. Take Google for instance, them wanting to know all your information and your location and them trying to take your money all the time can be considered a con, but also if you think about all that Google provides from information to a platform for commerce the pros and cons become balanced. The same goes for Facebook as well, there are cyber bullies, and Facebook can be a platform to persuade negativity, but at the same time it can be a platform to promote positivity and good things. So I wouldn't say a corporation is neither completely evil or completely good, but that there is a balance in every corporation.

Although many of these digital corporations have negative qualities they ca be also be argued to be extremely beneficial to the community. In my opinion corporations like Facebook and Twitter cause the most conflict. I wouldn't say the programs themselves cause conflict rather than the people using it. Many people use these programs to engage in activities that are unjust, immoral, and sometimes even illegal. Apple is another product that has many negative attributes. Unfortunately its pretty clear that this corporations shows no regard for its costumers but this again falls back on the people. Knowing that there are major faults with apple products and that there are better products out there doesn't stop people from continuing to make the chose of purchasing these items.

In contrast, which of those digital corporations (or other digital corporations you are aware of) seems to do the most good. Why might you think this?

Microsoft is one of the corporation that seems to benefit the public most. This corporation actively provides a new way to communicate other people while not appearing to have many negative qualities.

  6. E bay can have a sense of playing the middle man in evil tendencies. This is because anything can be sold over the website and it's not always what the customer ordered. And to the eye or outside person this can lower the websites credibility and reliability because people you've never met before can't be trusted.

On the contrast, companies such as Wayfair or Amazon seem to do a better job at making sure users get exactly what they order by creating online shopping directly from manufactures to ensure the desired product.

  7. I think that Facebook has the greatest tendency for evil because most everyone on earth uses Facebook, which means they probably all have their friends added, which means that they all can see one another's posts. Many people use Facebook for cyber bullying and feeding false information to people, such as the many articles people share that spread false information.

I think google does the most good because google is always there, google helps you cheat on math homework and translates Spanish homework for you, and if you want to see a picture of a cat eating a peach, well, just type it into google and there you go!!

  8. I think that Google has the tendency for the greatest evil (ironic because of their "don't be evil" mantra) because it allows Internet users to access other potentially evil websites. Thus, it acts as a sort of middle man. Of course, Google itself may not appear to be evil because it's technically a web browser (that is the term, right?). But, without it, you can't access a large number of websites (unless you're using something like Yahoo! or Baidu, but that's besides the point). In contrast, websites like Khan Academy do a large amount of good because it revolves around education. I'm not saying that the Internet should be full of nothing but educational opportunities, but those sorts of sites are extremely beneficial to a large number of people.

  9. Of the many major digital corporations , I am unable to pinpoint one that has the greatest tendency for evil. For one, evilness is a subjective term and, just like the article stated, every company has "evil" and well meaning actions. I also don't know enough about the major corporations to tell you definitively which is the most evil, although I am certain there are some who think they know, because I think that in order to truly know you would have to get into the mind of each company's CEO.

For many of the same reasons I am unable to pinpoint a universally evil company, I couldn't tell you a digital corporation who is 100% good. However, I am inclined to believe that "non-profit" websites that promote the well being of other people (freerice.com), the well being of the enviorment (epa.gov), or the well being of animals (aspca.org) are some of the most well-intentioned websites. I also feel that websites that promote scientific knowledge and ingenuity, such as nasa.gov, are also very beneficial.

  11. Although Snapchat is one of my favorite social media apps, I feel that it is apparent that it has a tendency to be "evil." They have now included in one of their more recent updates, an option to be see or be seen on a map of all your Snapchat "followers," users, and so on. I find that this is very dangerous, and potentially threatens a persons safety by exposing their location. Another thing that the app offers is for users to see if viewers have screenshotted or opened messages and/or are typing. This isn't technically evil, but it is inconvenient for users who simply like someones outfit or object, want to save a pretty picture of someone, or don't want someone to see that they have viewed a sent message. Especially for more reserved and shy users who can get humiliated quickly. Despite all that I've said, I will continue to use Snapchat because in reality it still has one of the best social media apps out there at the moment.

In contrast, a digital corporation that does the most good in my opinion is Wattpad. Wattpad is one of those lesser known apps. It is an outlet for young teens to write and get their work out there. I really enjoy this app and it flags disrespectful or inappropriate comments. So for the most part it is completely safe to use and free. I highly recommend it!
