Journalism; A Day Without Media Reflection; The History of Journalism Project

Our first major unit in this course will cover News Media. Before we return to the lab, please watch the following video and respond in your journals to the ideas presented here.

American News Media: Biased & Oversimplistic

LAB: please select a news article from the news bar (in the link section to the right side of your screen) and read it. In the comment section below, please post an answer to these questions:
A. What was the title and author of the article you read?
B. Summarize the main point of the article. What information did the journalist provide to us?
C. What political, religious, social, or marketing angle made this article "newsworthy"? Perhaps ask: who will benefit from you knowing this information? Is there a "slant" to the reporting? Who is the audience NOT intended for? How might this article appeal to advertisers? What are you being "sold"? Etc.
LAB Task #2: Reflect on a "Day Without Media". From your reading of the article: "Fighting a Social Media Addiction" and your homework this past weekend to avoid mass media, discuss/write about your experience of avoiding the media for 8 hours. Post your commentary in the comment section below.

You should complete both commentaries by the end of class today for credit.

When you are done with LAB TASK #1 & LAB TASK #2, please move on to our first project in Journalism: The History of Journalism project. See below for details.

1. You should begin with research.
2. Take notes and research one of the topics on the signup sheet coming around class. If you have two people in your group, explore different sites and work in parallel (do not sit next to your partner and talk while one person is doing all the work!)
3. Make sure to copy your site or internet address/URL's into your notes. You need to be able to cite the sources you use.
4. As we work on this project, coordinate your notes with your partner (or organize your notes for yourself if working alone). Share what you learned and come to a consensus as to how it is to be presented in a Prezi or Powerpoint.
5. If you are working in a group of 2 divide up the work as to visual and written. Who is writing the outline and who is putting together the Prezi or Power Point. Keep in mind that you will be both receive the same grade. If one person does less than quality work, the outcome will reflect on both group members.
6. Create an outline to make sure you know what you have to cover and what you are covering in the presentation.
7. The due date for this project will be set by the end of this week. We will be working on our projects next class as well, so bring your materials with you to class. If you know you will be absent, please alert your partner, if you have one.

History of Journalism Project Directions (read carefully):
1. Pick a partner (or work independently) and select one of the topics on the sign up sheet going around class. Record your topic so you know what you need to investigate.
2. You will need to turn in an outline, a Powerpoint or Prezi presentation (URL or file), a works cited page, and a short reflection.
3. You will need to present your Powerpoint or Prezi to the rest of the class. The outline, works cited page, and reflection go to me (and are due when you give your presentation to the class).

HOMEWORK: A. Please read the handout "Looking Back: The History of American Media" and take notes on key ideas or important information in the chapter. Please hand in your notes for participation credit next class.

B. Please aim to complete Chew on This for Friday. You should be able to examine the text using the media studies vocabulary notes you took last class. More info on what exactly to look for in the book will be forthcoming in our next lesson. You will be tested on this book and we will discuss it in class as an example of investigative journalism.

  1. It was extremely difficult, being that the weather was terrible and I really wanted to watch a movie. I was very tempted to listen to music or check instagram, because those things are a huge part of my daily life. I was able to distract myself by playing poker with my step brothers, but it didn't last eight hours. I was forced to use the computer to right my essay for WHAP. I tried. It was hard. I failed.

  2. the author of the article i read is Bill Chappell. The title of the article i read is called "Kentucky State trooper killed in highway shooting" . The main point of the article was to explain to everyone what happened at an average conducted traffic stop at 10:20pm on a Sunday. The journalist provided information to us about the name of the suspect, the name of the officer that was shot after trying to stop the suspects car, the information also provides us with the time it had happened, and what day it had occurred. Along with giving information to us about what the suspect had done, they also gave information about how the suspect had exited the car shorltly afterwards and was running on foot as the shot down officer gave a warning to other officers saying how the suspect is armed and dangerous. The information also provides us with what happened to the shot down officer during the "mahunt" and explaining that the officer had died shortly after arriving at a hospital. The person whom will benefit from me knowing about this article is the now deceased officer, by giving me information on how that man died and what he did as he was slowly dying.

  3. Name: Kentucky State Trooper Killed in Highway Shooting
    Author: Giacomo Luca
The main point of this article is 33-year-old Joseph Cameron Ponder, who was fatally shot late Sunday night on a Kentucky state highway which performing a traffic stop. The suspected shooter remains on the loose, considered armed and dangerous. Residents are advised to stay indoors with their doors and windows locked, as a manhunt is in progress. The suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks.
One of the things Luca included in the article was that the shooter was a “black male.” Law Enforcement interacting with the African American community has been a controversial and click-able topic for some time now. By saying that, Luca is trying to appeal to active social issues such as race. This article is obviously favoring the Kentucky Police Department since they just lost an officer. This article is intended for America, more specifically Kentucky.

  5. A. Australian prime minister ousted in internal party challenge
    Associated press
    B. Tony Abbott was dismissed from his position as a party leader and this decision could mean a change in climate change opinion and gay marriage recognition.
    C. This is newsworthy because his opinions were keeping certain social issues from being addressed and changed in Australia and this could call for reform. There is a left wing slant to this article. The audience is not intended for those opposing these issues. I'm being sold the idea of Australian social reform.

The title of the article was Kentucky State trooper killed in highway shooting written by Giacomo Luca. The main point of the article is the murder of a police officer in the line of duty. It was another sad tragedy, however, the article is primarily about the offender, Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks. The authorities are trying to keep the people safe as they try to find the offender, and as he is still on the run, which is the main reason why the article is here; not to inform the public about the death of a police officer, but to inform the public about a criminal carrying a gun.
The reason why this article is “newsworthy” is the person shot. “Another police officer has been killed in the line of duty” is how the article starts off, immediately signaling the tone and main idea of what allowed this article to be published. The news is mostly for the people of Kentucky and surrounding states because the criminal is on the loose and possesses weapons on his body. There’s a slant towards people who feel pity for the men and women of the force and feel devastated for the continued violence still going on after months and years of more violence.

  7. A. “Stephen Breyer’s ‘The Court and the World’” by John Fabian Witt
    B. The journalist provided information about how foreign law has given American law a bit of trouble when dealing with foreign affairs that affected the U.S. He discussed Stephen Breyer’s views that in this ever changing and growing world it is hard for American law to be completely isolated from other law systems in the world. We have to take into account how other countries govern their people in order to make fair court decisions about foreign affairs. He also speaks of having a universal system of law that people can follow but has people who disagree and believe this will take away America’s individuality.
    C. The thing that makes this article newsworthy is that it speaks of the political systems of many different countries and this therefore makes this issue about many different people from many different places. It is also social because the rulings that the court makes based on the various judicial systems of the world will affect the people living in these countries. There is a bit of a slant because they are calling out America on how it isn’t very culturally aware and just focusing on its own policies. The thing that is being sold is this new type of law that everyone could follow.

  8. A. Mexico slams Egypt 'air strike' after tourists killed
    Staff writers as Yahoo News.
    B. An Egyptian airstrike mistakenly kills 12 tourists. The military mistook the tourists for terrorists, and sent an airstrike to their location, killing at least two Mexicans and many others.
    C. the Mexican government was extremely angry at this situation, killing at least two innocent citizens. This international incident was extremely serious, making it newsworthy. This article is definitely showing the Mexican side of the story, portraying them as completely innocent victims. It gives no detail of what caused the Egyptians to react this way other than 'a mistake'. They may have had understandable reasoning behind their actions, but if so, this article does not tell of them. We are being 'sold' a story of pity for Mexico.

  9. The media abstinence was relatively difficult seeing as I broke it three times, but it wasn't terrible because I was busy for most of the eight hours. It was sort of similar to being grounded.

  10. Media Challenge

When I was first given this assignment I thought that I would never be able to do it but once I began, it wasn't that hard for me not to look at media. There were a few points throughout the day when I would accidentally turn on the radio out of habit and I would start my 8 hours over but besides that I wasn't that affected. I was able to distract myself by reading, doing my homework, and helping out around the house, things I didn't have time for when my life was being consumed by media. It showed me how much I do rely on media to communicate and for entertainment. It made me think more about how much media affects me and others.

  12. Lab Task #1:
Title: Kentucky State trooper killed in highway shooting
    Author: Giacomo Luca
The main point of the article was to inform of a Kentucky State topper being shot in the line of duty. He was conducting a traffic shot when the suspect Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks started firing multiple times and hitting the officer Joseph Cameron Ponder. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. What made this newsworthy was the fact it was officer hit. If was a ‘normal’ person people would care, but it wouldn’t be as talked about. The audience this is not intended for is probably people who’ve had bad experiences with police officers because they’ll brush it off and just not care.
    Lab Task #2:
For the “Day Without Media” I, in a way, accidentally did it. On Saturday I woke up at about 10 o’clock. From 10 until 1 I was taking a shower, doing my hair, and doing my makeup. I usually bring my phone with me to listen to music as I get ready but it was dead and I needed it charged. From 1 until about 2 my mom and I were taking my sister to her friend’s house and shopping. I couldn’t use my phone because we were nearly out of data for the month and my mom would lose her mind if we went over again. So I just talked with her for that hour. After that, we had to head back home to grab my niece so we could go to my cousin’s birthday party. We got there at about 3 o’clock and through the whole ride I slept. At the party they were playing football but I hate football so I just went and entertained my cousins and her friends and played in the rain with my aunt’s dog. My mom and I left the party at about 5 and, again, we just talked the whole ride . Then, when we got home I did some more of my homework in my room and read Chew on This all without music (though that was only because I forgot where i put my phone). At about 7 I went back in the living room with my mom and watched a movie ending my 9 hour streak without media.

  13. My reflection on staying off of social media for 8 hours was...well, interesting. I honestly thought i wouldn't make it past the first hour but surprisingly it was really easy. I really didn't do anything that day but go to my aunt's cousins funeral and sleep that day.

    Day Without Media

Eight hours without any sort of media was sort of difficult but time is just an illusion we humans fabricated to schedule our lives with. I managed to complete the challenge, and my only problem was not falling asleep in the middle of it. I occupied myself with reading lengthy books and writing. It wasn’t too much, because I scheduled my time and was meticulous about how and when I looked at the clock to check my status. Though I had some urges to listen to music as I read, I managed to ignore it with writing or just juggling which books I read. I didn’t have any issues with getting on the computer, because I finished my WHAP essay the previous night before the challenge and I finished my homework during it. It was peaceful, but I’m sort of glad I wasn’t alone in the house, haha.

  15. a) “Kentucky State trooper killed in highway shooting” by Giacomo Luca
    b) The point of this article was to provide information about a deadly shooting in our country. A state trooper was shot and killed while conducting traffic while the shooter fled the scene.
    c) This is newsworthy because a man was shot and killed in the line of duty and not enough people are paying attention to it. There is a slight slant towards the trooper killed because, you know, he was innocent but because he was a cop he was killed. The audience is for the majority of people, and all will benefit from knowing it. The audience may not be for people who absolutely and vehemently hate cops. We are not being “sold” anything

  16. A. The title and author of the article I read is How Todd Starnes Is Compromising Fox New's Credibility by The Atlantic.
    B. The main point of this article is how a reporter Todd Starnes is ruining Fox New's credibility with his misleading facts and his conservative views. The information the journalist provide us was the background of Todd Starnes and the downfall od Fox New's.

  17. A. The destruction of homes after California wild fire.
    ABC News Meghan Keneally
    B. Two massive fires in California made mass destruction in the San Francisco area, making people evacuate their homes and have no homes to come home to. The fire had covered 50,000 acres of California area destroying over 1,000 homes and businesses.
    C. This article would not appeal to someone who isn't interested in nature or civilization. It's selling he safety you need with wildfires and the dangers.

    a. Mexico Slams Egypt ‘air strike’ after tourists killed.
    b. The main points of the article were how Egypt mistakenly targeted a group of tourists. Killing 12 and wounding more than 10. It mostly went over how the Mexicans suffered from the accidental attack and how they handled the problem.
    c. People that might benefit from this new article is tourists. If there is an accidental air attack on a place that you were planning on visiting, you might want to think twice about actually going. This audience isn’t really intended for people who don’t travel a lot. If you’re not planning on going anywhere then you probably won’t have to worry about this kind of stuff, although it is very possible considering this air attack was an accident. In this article the reader kind of has to decide how they feel on the whole topic, who’s to blame, was it really an accident, etc.

  19. Day Without Media
I was unable to complete this assignment. Not because I was a stubborn teen and just did not want to. I could not do it because I needed to use the media and technology to do homework. I needed to write and email an AP essay, work on choreography for dance, write a response to an online article, and much more. In this day and age, teens need media in order to be successful in their school work. I am sorry that I could not accept this challenge, but, in all honesty, I wasn’t going to sacrifice multiple grades in multiple classes for this single assignment.
