John Oliver's satirical commentary on the debate
What were the big issues the commentators asked the candidates?
ReplyDeleteSome of the issues addressed in the debates were more specifically about the changing of some laws. For example, gun control was discussed and many people have tried to give explanations to how they feel about the idea and/or how they're dealing with the issue. (Jebb Bush stated how California laws take guns away from adolescents and send them to jail for doing so as his method of "containing the violence".) Another one was marijuana legalization and how it would be addressed without infringing on national sovereignty. There was also some discussion about George W. Bush’s time in office, but not too many spoke of it, rather, they focused solely on Obama and it was kind of really not okay.
What angered, displeased, or disappointed you with what the candidates said?
Well, for one, one of the candidates stated that the country of Syria was "a breeding ground for terrorists" and it's like... okay... that sounds fake but okay. Also! They keep talking about Obama. Why are they talking about Obama that is not even relative to his time in office? It would be understandable if they were making comparisons to themselves and how they can do better than Obama, but most of the comments consisted of the mistakes done during his time in office without any explicit cited evidence..? Like, why would you even discuss about him but say nothing about what he has done, or supposedly done? It isn’t logical and it isn’t exactly the image I want to see in presidential candidates.
There’s also the fact that Governor Christie thought to tie marijuana laws with pro-life. Now, I laughed at that.
What was your reaction to watching the debates?
Essentially, it was a joke! They were just arguing to and fro between each other and none of them really and exactly suggested or even claimed an idea to help our country. They didn’t discuss about the immense debt we have, or how they would give jobs to people. They were just spouting about their ideals and what they will do when their president. However, if they really wanted it to happen, they would’ve worked on it now!
Though, I admit, it gave me some laughs. I would put watching the debates the same level as watching chickens fighting.
Examine the camera work and media coverage by Fox News. What bias or slant might the media have used to discredit or improve the image of the candidates?
The only example that immediately comes to mind is when they had cameras on Jeb Bush and Donald Trump during the discussion with the war with Iraq and Afghanistan. It was hilarious with how Trump’s face contorted when Bush stated his disinterest in strengthening the militia. It was almost delightful when Jeb continued to state his disinterest in the militia throughout the debate. Because whenever Jeb did that, you could practically feel Trump’s face contorting into a scowl.
