It's not too early to think about career paths after high school. Mass communication (media studies) is a large field and covers a lot of different careers and professions. The ability to write, research, critically think, and communicate effectively are all important skills for a writer, and important skills for every professional in the work force today.
Take a look at some college programs in Media Studies/Mass Communication/Journalism from the area. Look at the curriculum, the requirements for admission, and other details for students interested in pursuing a degree program in the field. How might you measure up? What kinds of courses would you have to take? What does the major cover or entail? Research in the lab.

Jenna - I am interested in the journalism program at MCC. This program covers professional communications, public speaking, the principles of journalism, etc. The course promises a liberal arts background with an emphasis to writing, speaking, and communication. It is unique in that it develops and hones in on the skill of writing unlike any other course. I learned that from this career path, it will teach me to become more independent but rely on others when it comes to presentation. My attitude towards this course is so-so. It looks interesting but I haven't made a set decision. I can use media to see what major audiences like and incorporate these trends in my stories and appeal to as many people as possible.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I am not very interested in media careers relating to journalism, and reporting, and really anything to do with the news. I am more so into the arts aspect. I would love to be a screenwriter and write movies or TV shows. In that, media would be used a lot actually according the programs at NYU Rita & Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing and also USC John Wells Division of Writing for Screen & Television, which are two of my top choices for college, but I wouldn't consider a job simply based on media, such as journalist or reporter. Media to me relates to the different outlets used to communicate information. I would use media because in my writing I would use real life problems and real life news to inspire my writing or my stories, and through my writing I would share my outlook on it. So in a way, me and my writing would be an outlet that communicates information. So now that I think about it media would be a huge part of this career because not only is it used in the writing but once the writing goes from paper to screen, that's media. Once what's on the screen gets public, there would be reviews, critics, comments, opinions, spread through newspapers, radio, television, etc. I think when dealing with any career media will be a great part of it so if you don't have a love or understanding for media already, get used to it.
ReplyDeleteso i know that this wasnt what was asked but like i dont even know what i want to do like everything that is appealing pays zero dollars and unless you want to be broke you cant do it
ReplyDeleteand everything that does actually pay like a job should it's boring office jobs and take too many years of money and education and sucks your soul out and leaves you an empty corn husk at age 60 with your 401k can i not be stable and have fun with my career jesus christ
since i go to sota for cw then i assume ill go into something like journalism or something nerdy like that but who is even hiring for that??? buzzfeed?? they're all radical left wing men haters
but then an actual career i might go into is being a vet because animals but then that's way harder than being a regular doctor and if im a doctor im just another asian steryotype
I may pursue a career in media studies because I want to travel abroad and I want to report on festivals and holidays around the world. It seems interesting. I learned I could study abroad in different places such as Beijing , the Netherlands and other places like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning on pursuing a career in law. More specifically, I'd like to be a prosecuting attorney. I noticed that the college I'd like to attend, SUNY Brockport, has a good criminal justice program that is said to give students "a strong foundation in a wide range of areas of criminal justice." Another college I am interested in, Duquesne University, actually has one of the best law programs in the country. As for students majoring in criminal justice in college, you must take the following courses:
ReplyDeleteCRJU 110: Introduction to Justice Research, Writing, and Reasoning
CRJU 301: Criminal Courts and Judicial Processes
CRJU 340: Substantive Criminal Law
CRJU 350: Constitutional Criminal Procedure
SOC 100: Principles of Sociology
PSY 100: General Psychology
PSY 370: Abnormal Psychology
POSC 100: Introduction to American Government
PHIL 170: Critical Reasoning
PHIL 352I: Philosophy of Law
PHIL 451I: Liberty and Justice: Race, Ethnicity & Gender in American Law
Of course, there are more courses that are recommended for students to take. However, that would be a lot more to list. As for media studies, I am not planning on going into media as a future career. If I did have to choose a career in this particular field that I'd be interested in, I'd have to go with journalism, and I'd look into MCC's journalism program. Some of the courses you have to take if you'd like to be a journalist are:
-Broadcast Journalism.
-Corporate Communication/Public Relations.
-Feature Writing.
-Mass Media Law.
-Photojournalism.
-News Writing and Reporting.
Like I said, it's much more likely that I'll go into law as opposed to journalism, but it is nice to think about other options as, perhaps, a backup plan.
I looked at 2 colleges for nursing but i will take English courses and/or journalism courses. i looked at MCC and it offers 4 credits, it focuses on the basic needs of maternal and neonatal patients, using the Nursing Process to provide quality, safe, patient centered care for diverse populations through teamwork and collaboration. Saint John Fisher has a nursing program that is for a major only. It offers 840 clinical hours. For a bachelors degree it is two years. New graduates in the greater Rochester area who have a B.S. in nursing and an RN license start at $45,000-$49,000. After graduating you can apply for high ranked programs and locations.
ReplyDeletei may pursue a career in technology and editing because that has always been an interest to me. i took creative writing because i like to write skits and stories, so this course could help me with what i am planning to pursue in the future. I am still unsure of where ill go to college (if I even) but i plan to create lots of small skits and movies to build up my career of being an editor (i dont really know whats its professionally called)
ReplyDeleteI haven't yet chosen a particular college, but I have two competing against each other. I intend to attend UPenn (University of Pennsylvania) or USC (University of Southern California) to double major in Business Management / Economics and Marketing and Operations Management with bachelors degrees. As well as, minor in Cinema Studies and/or Cinematography. Through my choices I have learned that my potential career could be adventurous and exciting as well as a way to provide and live the life that I desire. My attitude in regards of media is a love/hate relationship. I love that media is a way to communicate and share material in an accessible and convenient way. However, I hate that it consumes so much of my time and decreases my human interactions and sociability. As a writer I might use media to make a statement or point that I'm sure will get across to others because of social media being such a large platform.
ReplyDeleteat first i didnt know what i wanted to be, either a Architect or a entrepreneur. i learned that to be an architect you'll have to understand how to build and design buildings, software and some other cool things. it takes time in college but the salary a year is around 64,000 and some change. a entrepreneur basically starts his own business or company and build from the ground up. i wanted to do this because i had good ideas on things for kids, and adults. to do both ill have to double major in college and take a few years and college to become both.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really interested in media studies however I do want to study criminal justice. I['m obviously going to have to know how to write and read and communicate very well. I'm interested in the CIA but I would have to move around a lot. Being an agent I would have to really be able to talk to people a lot. I have to work really hard in order to get a scholarship. Mcc has a lot to offer for criminal justice
ReplyDeleteI have, as of recent, found my self very interested with space, physics, and other natural phenomenon. Because of this set of interests I have decided that I would like to explore a career in physics, specifically in research, space and astronomy, or in technology. Another benefit of entering a career in physics is that the average physicist in the US makes 83,640 dollars annually, with an upwards of 104,280 dollars annually. After some research I found out that the best colleges for a career in physics are: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Harvey Mudd College, Harvard University, and Cornell University. I hope to enter one of these of universities, (or any one of the other top universities in physics) whether or not I go to a less prominent college first.
ReplyDeleteWho are you Homicidal Muffin? This name does not appear in my rolls. Please let me know who you are Homicidal Muffin so that I can give you a participation grade.
DeleteIn the near future, i plan on enrolling into s.v.a ( school of visual arts). i want to go here in the future so that i can better educate myself on the subject and become a better art. Art makes me a better person in a way ( i hope that makes sense) because being able to create visual arts is like writing, anyone can write or draw but it takes an art that not that many people have. I, one of the lucky many, have that special mindset or gift that is rarely given. I hope this would lead into a career into the art world, we're my piece or pieces will be in a museum and i will be remembered that i love doing, not something that i did throughout high-school; do not get me wrong, i loved it very much and will cherish the moments I've had in that classroom, but it's not for me . so i hope to be accepted into s.v.a so that i may better my experience and talent in art.
