What Makes Something Newsworthy?
Factors Journalists Use to Gauge How Big a Story Is by Tony Rogers:
Over the years editors, reporters and journalism professors have come up with a list of factors or criteria that help journalists decide whether something is newsworthy or not. They can also help you decide HOW newsworthy something is. Generally, the more of the factors below that can be applied to your feature or story, the more newsworthy it’s bound to be.

Impact or Consequences
Generally, the greater the impact a story has, the more newsworthy it is. Events that have on impact on your readers, that have real consequences for their lives, are bound to be newsworthy. An obvious example would be the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In how many ways have all of our lives been affected by the events of that day? The greater the impact, the bigger the story.
Conflict
If you look closely at the stories that make news on any given day, chances are most of them will have some element of conflict. Whether it’s a dispute over banning books at a local school board meeting, bickering over budget legislation in Congress, or the ultimate conflict – war – conflict is almost always newsworthy.
Conflict is newsworthy because as human beings we’re naturally interested in conflict. Think of any book you’ve ever read or movie you’ve ever watched – they all had some type of conflict. Without conflict, there would be no literature or drama. Conflict is what propels the human drama. Conflict is so interesting to us as humans that it can even make an otherwise dull-sounding story – the passage of a city budget – into something utterly gripping. And the ultimate conflict – war – is always a huge story.
Loss of Life/Property Destruction
There’s an old saying in the news business: If it bleeds, it leads. What that means is that any story involving loss of human life – from a fire to a shooting to a terrorist attack -- is bound to be newsworthy. Likewise, nearly any story that involves property destruction on a large enough scale – a house fire is a good example-- is also bound to be news.
Many stories have both loss of life and property destruction – think of the house fire in which several people perish. Obviously, loss of human life is more important than property destruction, so write the story that way.
Proximity
Proximity has to do with how close an event is geographically is to your readers or viewers. A house fire with several people injured might be big news in your hometown newspaper, but chances are no one will care in the next town over. Likewise, wildfires in California usually make the national news, but clearly, they’re a much bigger story for those directly affected.
Prominence
Are the people involved in your story famous or prominent? If so, the story becomes more newsworthy. For example, if an average person is injured in a car crash, chances are that won’t even make the local news. But if the president of the United States is hurt in a car crash, it makes headlines around the world.

Prominence can apply to politicians, movie stars, star athletes, CEOs – anyone who’s in the public eye. But it doesn’t have to mean someone who’s famous worldwide. The mayor of your town probably isn’t famous, even locally. But he or she is prominent in your town, which means any story involving him or her is likely to be more newsworthy. Prominence can apply on a local, national or international level.
Timeliness
In the news business, we tend to focus on what’s happening this day, this hour, this minute. So events that are happening now are often more newsworthy than those that happened, say, a week ago.
Another factor that relates to timeliness is currency. This involves stories that may not have just happened but instead, have an ongoing interest to your audience. For example, the rise and fall in gas prices is something that’s been happening for several years, but it’s a story that’s still relevant to your readers, so it has currency.

Novelty
Another old saying in the news business goes, “When a dog bites a man, no one cares. When the man bites back – now that’s a news story.” The idea, of course, is that any deviation from the normal, expected course of events is something novel, and thus newsworthy.

  2. Article: Killings in Gaza, New Embassy in Jerusalem, and Peace as Distant as Ever
    Link: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/14/world/middleeast/israel-gaza-jerusalem-embassy.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=a-lede-package-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

According to points that suggest a newsworthy article, this article highlights loss of life, property destruction, and major forms of conflict. The article title immediately lets readers know about the chaos in Jerusalem and the loss of life associated with such. The Gaza killings also relate to the long going fight for the holy city between Jews and Muslims. The problem is in fact worsening, which adds to the conflict of a newsworthy story because the stalemate fight heightened and that in of itself is eye grabbing. The fight for peace is always an interesting story, but the fact that the featured article is centered in the Middle East is very nice as most front covers do not address problems in the region.

  3. The article I chose was 'Carolina Panthers Expected to be Sold to Hedge Fund Manager David Tepper for about 2.2 Billion" and I believe this is 'news worthy' since the Panthers are a popular football team, and are many people's favorite. I think people would read this, especially Panthers fans, to see who would own/manage their team once it was sold.

  5. Article: Facebook’s Latest Transparency Move: Data, Few Details, on What It Removes

This article is considered newsworthy because social media is very prevalent today. Therefore, any updates, changes, or tweaks, to one of the most famous apps in America, Facebook, would get the world buzzing and catch peoples attention because social media has become a huge part of peoples lives.

    1. This relates to the timeliness because social media is something huge within today's society; it's what's "in".

  6. Both articles contain timeliness and conflict. They both contain the same information however in a different order. They focus on things that are happening now or in the past that is continuing to resurface. They contain conflict around politics so Donald Trump of course who has pretty much been in the news since he became president.

  7. The article I chose is "Gaza buries its dead as death toll from protests at fence with Israel rises to at least 60" from the Washington Post. The article was written by Loveday Morris and Ruth Eglash. The article is newsworthy because it deals a lot with loss of life and the destruction of property. There is also conflict. These things can make a story newsworthy because they are important events, and thus, a large amount of people will want to know about the story.

  8. The article "Gaza buries its dead as death toll from protests at fence with Israel rises to at least 60" is featured on the Washington Post. It is exceptionally newsworthy because it discusses conflict resulting in a loss of life. It also highlights a particularly "hot" modern geographical area and religious conflict. Lastly, the story discusses an event that occurred earlier that day.

  10. Article:Waves of Gazans vs. Israeli Tear Gas and Bullets: Deadliest Mayhem in Years
    link:https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/14/world/middleeast/gaza-israel-deadly-protest-scene.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=a-lede-package-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

What makes this article newsworthy is the highlights of the lives lost and the destruction of property. Not only does the title go right into the tragic events that occurred recently but there's picture evidence. this event has been one of the worst mayhem in years. The first hand story and first person point of view is also newsworthy because someone who had personally dealt with the event and was there to see the lives of many innocent people took can have a good grasp on the audience because it's more personal.

"Ebola has infected dozens so far in Congo, killing 19, WHO says"

The article is informing people things that are happening in a different part of the world in case it affects others lives. the article discusses proximity, loss of life, and impact or consequences. The article engages the public by discussing a topic that may be interesting to the readers. The article has a tone of urgency which can pull the attention of the audience.

  13. Tom Wolfe's death is an example off loss of life for this article to "lead." The article also gives accurate back ground on his career, and his personal experiences.

The reason why this article is newsworthy is because the article talks about the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis over the boundary and it also talks about the loss of life which were the 60 people who have died so far. The proximity is far but still relevant as it was on the front page of the Washington Post.

  15. Raeona: The article that I selected was, 'My Adventures with the Trip Doctors' by Michael Pollan. This articles involves impact and consequence because it correlates to daily issues that people face. The introduction of drugs of that magnitude combined with regular prescription drugs is quite large and fascinating, and causes a lot of conspiracy.
