Radio & Broadcasting: An Introduction; Orson Welles & War of the Worlds

Period 7:

Brainstorm what you know about radio. In the COMMENT section of this blog, please evaluate how often you listen to radio programs? What kinds of programs do you listen to generally? Where do you "tune in" (both which radio stations do you listen to and/or where do you often listen to radio)? Why? (What's in it for you or your family?)

Originally, radio was filled with news and entertainment, along with music. Music, of course, has overwhelmed radio and is the most common form of entertainment sent through the airwaves to us. To begin our radio media unit let's take a look at some radio scripts and listen to the following plays:

Abbott & Costello's: Who's On First, our reading first, then let the professionals do it.
Lucille Fletcher: The Hitchhiker

Period 8:

(1:00 - 1:25) Let's read and interact with the following website:

Jess O'Callaghan's article: "Podcast Nerds Rejoice: Radio Plays Are Making a Comeback"
Please read this linked article. Then answer the 3 questions (turn these in today if we have time, otherwise, it's homework. Complete and turn in by next class.
1. Why does how we listen to radio/podcasts matter according to O'Callaghan?
2. What kinds of podcasts are "out there"?
3. How are new wave radio plays distinguishing themselves from the old ones? (Abbott & Costello or Lucille Fletcher's Hitchhiker, for example.)
(1:25 - 1:44)

Fake news is nothing new. One of the most influential "fake" news broadcasts created a public panic in 1938. Orson Welles was to blame, but this broadcast cemented his fame for the rest of his life.

Please read about Orson Welles at the following link and from the article/script of War of the Worlds. Find out the following information and take NOTES that you will turn in by the end of class.

1. Who is Orson Welles?
2. Name 3 different things he did that influenced mass media.

After reading/listening to the radio broadcast of War of the Worlds (1938), summarize the plot of the radio play. We'll get started in class, but please complete this program by Thursday of next week.

To ensure that you view this material, I will collect your notes for participation credit Thursday, March 5 and, possibly, test you on the material (see homework).

Read and then listen to the actual broadcast from 1938, you can find it here...Enjoy! War of the Worlds, 1938.

HOMEWORK: Please read part one of the chapter on radio and answer the questions for THURSDAY, March 5. If you did not complete your work today in class (or you were absent) please read the article linked above (0'Callaghan's article) and answer the 3 questions. Read the fiction/prose sample of A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and complete War of the Worlds by Thursday, March 5 as well. Return your radio scripts after this assignment.

  1. Generally, I don't listen to radio all that much. If I had the choice, I would never actually use the radio. The only time I ever listen to the radio is in my mom's car, whenever we are driving someplace. It's usually pop-stations that she enjoys, stations that I don't generally listen to because it's not my type of music. I can't name any stations in particular because I don't really listen, but i'ts more for my mom's enjoyment than mine.

    1. Good comment. I agree I only ever use the radio when I have no other options its pretty obsolete at this point.

  2. I know that the radio has been around for a long time. There are different programs you can listen to like the news, music, podcasts ect. I usually listen to the radio station 98pxy they play music all day and have a talk show every morning, most of the time tho I only listen to the radio in the car. - Sarah

  3. The only time I even listen to anything on the radio is in the car, and even then I tend to just put headphones on and listen to my own music. My parents normally listen to stations that only play pop music, and my grandma and uncle normally listen to country music because they can't stand anything else that plays. Compared to other forms of media I don't really have that much experience with the radio mainly because of the fact that for most of my life I've been surrounded by music streaming services where I can CHOOSE the song that I want to listen to.

  4. I usually only listen to the radio when I'm in the car. I'm typically in the car at least once a day and I listen to what my mom wants to listen to. In the car, listening to the radio is a lot easier than trying to connect my phone and I'm not always in the car for long periods of time so using the radio is just more convenient. When I was younger, I would listen to Radio Disney and some other stations, but I stopped when I found my own music that I liked.

  5. I only ever listen to the radio when I'm in the car. I usually listen to 98 PXY, 100.5, 101.3 NPR (if I'm driving with my dad), or K-Love. A lot of my childhood was based off of this one channel called Kids Place Live (I'm not sure of the channel number) where they played very odd songs (that could only be found on that radio station), had characters such as Absolutely Mindy and Jack "Live from the Monkey House," as well as calling in on your birthday for a "birthday mission." Ever since we lost Sirius XM I only really listen to the radio half the time I'm the car, I will often put on my own music when in the car with my brother. However, if I am not with him I'll put on the radio as a form of entertainment while I'm in the car.

I don't listen to very much anymore. When I was younger I remember listening to it a lot, before I got Apple Music on my phone and when I didn't have my nine hundred year old iPod on me. I still listen to the same stuff on the radio as when I was a kid just less frequently. My listening consists of Pop music, NPR, and Christmas music stations around Christmastime. Its almost always in the car on our way to or from somewhere. NPR is nice because it tells me about news and current events and stuff and they have interesting stories about the economy or science but at this point my family just has better options when it comes to music listening. We have a bunch of Sonos speakers in my house, Apple Music and pairs of earbuds, and even in the car we can connect the bluetooth or use an aux cord. Radio isn't nearly as relevant as it might have once been for us as there are just better methods of listening that are more convenient and more efficient (no ads too!).

  7. I've never really listened to Radio. The only time I could imagine doing so is in a car, but I generally prefer talking to people, and I also don't generally like the music that is being played on the radio. It just seems like a less convenient version of spotify. You can't chose the song you want so you are forced to listen to whatever is playing, or just listen to nothing. There is no reason why I would prefer to let someone else chose the music that I listen to. Also... There are so many ads. Looking for a radio station goes like this: Go to the station you generally like but it is playing a song that you really hate so you change to another station but it is playing an ad so you go to another station and it's playing a song you can tolerate but after ten seconds the song is either cut short and there is an ad or another song. In the meantime, a different station was playing the song you wanted but you missed it because you had no way of knowing. You can never enjoy the full song because they cut it short, you can't listen to a full song, there are too many ads, and you spend half the time looking for a good station. Music streaming is infinitley better. Yes it has ads, but the ratio of ad to music is considerably better. For radio it's like a 15 second ad for half a song and with music streaming its thirty seconds for three. I just made that up but that's what it feels like.

RADIO SUCKS AND IS A DEAD MEDIUM is all I'm trying to say. It's pointless

  8. Personally, I don't often listen to radio unless I'm in the car but even then I sit in the passenger seat with my headphones on, blasting my preferred music. When I do listen to the radio however, I tune into stations that play classical music preferably in the morning to calm me on my way to school. I am aware that not all classical music is calming but the sound of instruments is a nice sound for me. On other occasions, I listen to stations that play music that is popular for the times when in the realm of rap or pop music just to fill the void of silence typically. Stations that are having a fun dialogue also manage to keep my attention when talking to callers and whatnot.

  9. I barley listen to radio programs. I feel like the only time I actually listen to the radio is when I am forced such as when my mother is playing it when she is in the bathroom. The bad things about the radio the songs play over and over again. Also you can control which songs are played and if you missed a song you like you'd basically have no way of knowing. Other times I listen to it when I am sick of hearing the music that's downloaded on my phone. The type of programs I listen to include 103.9 and 105.5. These programs take time and talk to us people about daily life, including the weather, gossip in Rochester, around the world. Also they talk about real life events like sometimes politics and whats going on media wise. I often listen to radio when I am in the car. I think that radio sometimes is basically just something for people to hear when there driving. For me personally I would rather listen to the radio when driving because it doesn't sound right when theirs nothing playing.

  11. I don't often to radio unless I'm in the car. I don't really have a preference because my mom usually chooses. On the radio, things are repeated often and it gets annoying. I don't have a preferred station because I do not listen to radio. Additionally, my mom usually puts on her own music because she also dislikes the radio. Most of the time I will only listen to the radio if I am in someone else's car. I tend to listen to music on my phone because it has what I have. I often listen to things depending on my mood. Again, I never really know what is on the radio so it is hard to answer.
